What made it so hard to prepare for the GAMSAT was the fact that I didn’t know how to prepare, what resources to use, what type of detail we were expected to know. There were way too many what ifs circulating my mind and I was constantly stressed; because of not knowing what to study. I mean ok some people will try to help you but I still didn’t find that helpful, in fact listening to people such as friends that don’t really know the marking criteria is a bad idea. Many people told me that I needed to know Chemistry, Biology and Physics for section III, but that was way too broad of a study plan.

So I decided to do my research on all the available GAMSAT preparation courses out there; for weeks I went through went prep courses with a fine tooth comb. Comparing prices, content, information about the GAMSAT, professional and educated opinions on what markers are looking for (especially in section 2), how to combat the GAMSAT and how well were the practise questions structured (closeness to the real GAMSAT questions). At the end of it I found that although Des Oniell’s Complete Comprehensive Platinum course was a bit more expensive than the others, it was by far the best. It includes the following:

Des O’Neil Comprehensive GAMSAT course:

Science Revision course:

Each of the science sections stated above are divided into about 5 smaller subtopics. Each subtopic contains a comprehensive explanation of the topic. At the end of each subtopic there are about 50 questions relating to that subtopic with FULL WORKED OUT SOLUTIONS (so you can follow along)!!! That’s about 1500 questions with fully worked out solutions!

Over 1218 pages of comprehensive notes that will help you identify and study the areas of science that are considered important in the preparation for GAMSAT.

This book also contains problems to aid your development of scientific concepts and Multiple-choice GAMSAT style-questions, all of which come with answers and full solutions.

Writing Better Essays Course:
Over 30 marked model essays with markers’ appraisal so you know what markers are actually looking for when marking GAMSAT essays. Please remember GAMSAT essays are completely different than essays you have written in the past; whether it be a school or university, these are completely different.

Preparatory Prognostic exam:
A miniature sample exam, just to give you a sneak peak of what you can expect. The exam comes with sample essays and correct answers for the other sections.

Full practice exam:
A full length exam, containing 75 questions for section 1, 10 essay quotes for section 2 and 110 questions for section 3.

2. 10 Ozimed Practice Papers:
As they say, practice makes perfect! So you need practice before you get into the exam. These 10 ozimed papers offer you that bit practice just so you can get a feel of what to expect in the real exam. With each paper containing 75 section 1 questions, 10 quotes (section 2), 110 section 3 (Science) questions you can’t go wrong.

3. CD packed with 1000+ essays!
A CD jam packed with over 1000 GAMSAT style quotes with corresponding essays. Not only do the many quotes offer you some practice, but the essays provided help you understand what GAMSAT markers are looking for, but more importantly expand you understanding on certain issues. While reading through the essays, there were too many topics which I had never come across before, and so if I was to come across these topics during the GAMSAT I wouldn’t have been able to produce a decent essay. Although prior exposure to these topics and being able to collate various ideas from the essays supplied on this CD, I was a lot more confident and hence was able to produce brilliant essays (I got a mark of 76).

4. Des O’neill’s Interview course
After I got my GAMSAT mark of 74, I decided to but the Des O’Neill’s interview course to help me prepare for the interviews. Many people thought the GAMSAT was very tough, until they sat the interviews. I consider myself very well spoken, and I still thought that the interview was at times challenging. This course again explained what to expect during the interviews and provided some example scenarios.

5. CD packed with actual scenarios asked in 2008 and 2009;
This CD was compiled by students that sat the 2008 and 2009 interviews. There is about 100 different scenarios, this actually gives you a real feel! I actually got asked a scenario in 2009 that was also asked in 2008 and which I had already come across. So its clear that the interviewing bodies do recycle questions :).
