Advertising Jobs: Make It To The Cut

Advertisements can take a lot of forms and with these forms and facets come the different careers and paths to conquer. Are you more into promoting new products and services? Do you prefer more communicative positions or do you want to be the person behind a successful campaign? Do you think you are ready to be a part of the advertising industry?

There are many things to consider and to think about before you can pursue a career in advertising. Evaluating yourself is the first step. Other things that you need to keep in mind when applying for various advertising jobs are the following:

Being a Fresh Graduate is Never an Excuse

There are some unemployed people who cannot land a job because, they say, they have no experience and are but fresh graduates. However, if your mindset is like this, you will never accomplish anything. Start early on and visualize what you want to be. In this manner, you will be able to compile various works during your school years that you can use later on for your portfolio. So if you are an aspiring creative writer or copywriter, gather your sample writings when you worked for the school newspaper of from your creative writing classes. If you are aiming for a spot in the advertising department, you can present some sample projects you have done for a campaign. This would, at least, give the employer an idea of what you can offer for the company.

Keep On Trying

Never be discouraged when one employer says a bunch of negative comments about your portfolio. If ever you are told that you are not creative enough, it is not a reason for you not to try again. In the world of creative advertising, different employers have different tastes. It is for you to find the one who can appreciate your own creative works. Besides, it won’t hurt you to try again for the second or third time around.

Be As Interesting and Creative as Possible

In the world of advertising, you may not be able to go far when you keep yourself inside a box. All work and no play is not a good attitude especially when you need your creative juices to fuel your mind. Your workplace will eventually drain your passion, drive and spark that is why you need to take a breather once in a while. You need to have as many interests.

We all know that the internet is powered and made possible by the technical experts but there are instances when internet users find it difficult to browse a website. This is because the creative part of putting up a website or banner ad is missing. Creative advertisers are necessary to make these ads visually appealing and communicative.

In TV advertising, the importance of having a lot interests is significant. You can actually use these interests to come up with a new advertisement. Incorporating this and that is the key to a more creative advertisement. When an employer sees this in you, the probability of you getting hired is bigger.

Work Samples Are a Must

When applying for a job, it is difficult to carry your own chair. Actually, this is a major turnoff for most employers. It is not smart to directly say that you are talented, creative and flexible, thus you are a great addition for them. It is, without a doubt, better to bring with you some of your sample works and let these samples do the talking for you. For people who have no published work yet, a speculative ad or SPEC ADS in short should be considered. These can be your own version of published ads and can be a great way to show the employers your talent. Imagine yourself as an advertiser of a certain beauty product. How will you be able to do it? Or perhaps there is an advertisement of any kind that you wish to improve. Do your speculative ad as creative and as innovative as possible.

Consider Your Best Options

As much as possible, do not settle for a job that you consider your last resort. Of course, you have something in mind. Use this as your beacon light to successfully find the job that you want. Focus on this kind of job and never go away from it because you might end up unhappy with a second or third best job.
